This pattern is for owners of 9mm machines that don't have punchcards built-in. You'd like to do fairisle but you are not quite sure how to go about it. There are a couple of ways to do it. You can bring needles out to D for the contrast colour yarn, put the machine in Hold (Russell Levers to I for the Silver Reed machine), knit across with the main colour (needles in B, knit). Then knit down by hand the needles remaining in D with the contrast colour. Or if you have a set, recurring pattern and many rows to do, you can use the slip mechanism on your carriage. This pattern utilizes that feature, although I've done two rows with each colour rather than one. See pages 29 and 30 of your manual for knitting one row with each colour.
  Back

Cast on 33-0-33 sts with Colour C in 1x1 rib (zig-zag row worked L to R), hang weights and do 3 circular rows. CAL. Tension 4 work 11 rows in 1 x 1 rib. CAR. Transfer ribber sts to the main bed. Set tension to 7. RC000.

Row 50 - push needles in D at armhole edge to C and knit across to the right. Cast off or take off on waste yarn.

Neck
10-0-10 sts should be left for the neck. You can either cast off these sts as you would in hand knitting or pick up sts on each side of the 20 from the few straight rows leading up to the shoulder. (I picked up 3 sts at each side to makek a total of 26 for the back neck.) If you did this then knit 1 more row over all the sts in the main colour and take off on waste yarn. This will give you a nice row of sts to pick up for the neck, making a more stretchy back neck area.

FRONT
Cast on 33-0-34 in Colour C (extra stitch is for the centre V-neck, see neckband instructions). Continue as for back to Row 72. RC000. CAR

V-neck and Armhole Shaping - Push all needles to left of "O" to D position or holding position (Russell Levers to I). First stitch to R of "0" is centre stitch - isolate now with a piece of scrap yarn and take off. (Push empty needle back to A position (non-working).

Decreases at armhole now complete
Continue decreasing at neck edge (centreV) until 15 sts remain. Knit to row 44. CAL. Shortrow shoulder same as back. Complete other side to match.

Neckband (this is a quick way to do the neckband all in one go with the V shaping done after with a sewing machine. If you would prefer to knit the neck ribbing separately and shape the V as you knit: each side of the V is 36 sts long and the back neck is 26 sts.)
Join one shoulder. Cast on 49-0-49 in colour A in 1 x 1 rib formation. Work 6 rows in 1 x 1 rib, first 3 rows at T4 and next 3 at T5 after zig zag and circular rows. Transfer ribber stitches to main bed. Push stitches behind latches. Holding garment up with wrong side facing you, hang ribbing evenly. Latch tool cast off.

Armbands
Join other shoulder. Cast on 35-0-35 in Colour A. Do ribbing same as the neckband and attach to garment.

Finishing
If you knit the neckband as one piece, fold excess material in V to wrong side and stitch (I usually do this on the sewing machine because it comes out great!) Flatten the excess knitting at the V on the wrong side and catch to the ribbing seam. Using matching yarn and bodkin come up through centre stitch isolated earlier and using Swiss Darning method embroider over join on front of "V", making evenly spaced stitches up to the top. If you knit the ribbing for the V neck in pieces sew together. Join side seams. Weave in all yarn ends on inside of vest.
