Fingerless Mitts in Patons Décor

Yarn Patons Décor (75% acrylic, 25% wool) 192 m/210 yds per 100 gram/3.5 oz. Sand and Sea colouration.
Gauge 6 sts to 1 inch in stocking stitch (although tension doesn't have to be right on as these are stretchy)
Needles 4 mm, 4 double pointed
Size To fit a medium sized hand.

Make two as mitts are reversible and can be worn on either hand.

Starting at the wrist, cast on 36 sts and join into a round being careful not to twist. Mark the start of the rounds.
Knit in K1 P1 rib for 20 rounds

Increase for thumb
At the start of the next round: Knit the first stitch, Increase 1 st in the purl stitch by knitting in the front and purling into the back of the stitch, knit the next stitch, increase 1 st in next purl stitch as before, then rib around. The thumb is worked in stocking stitch not rib and these five stitches are the start.
Next round: Knit the five stitches in stocking stitch without increasing and rib around.
Next round: Where you have the the five stocking stitches, increase 1 st, K(3), increase 1 st, rib around.
Continue these last two rows of increasing until you have 16sts for the
thumb (figures in brackets will be increasing).
Next 3 rounds, do not increase, but k1, p1 completely around (this gives a nice edge to the top of the thumb.
Next round: Cast off 16 thumb stitches (in rib) and complete the round in rib.
Next round: Close up the gap and K1,P1 around.
Continue with 14 more rows of rib and then cast off.
Make other fingerless mitt to match.
